Description
In 1687 Father Eusebio Francisco Kino a Jesuit missionary arrived to bring the Catholic faith to the Pimeria Alta (the place of the Upper Pimas). The newly established mission, a community for converting the natives to Christianity, became San Cayetano de Tumacacon. Though we often associate "church" with "mission" Tumacacori did not have an actual church building until after the Pima Rebellion of 1751. At that time the community was moved to its present site to be near the newly established Tubac Presidie. The present church was built by the Franciscans between 1800 and 1822 ... many years after Father Kino had died.
