Petroglyphs (also called rock engravings) are pictogram and logogram images created by removing part of a rock surface by incising, picking, carving, and abrading. Outside North America, scholars often use terms such as "carving", "engraving", or other descriptions of the technique to refer to such images. Petroglyphs are found world-wide, and are often (but not always) associated with prehistoric peoples. The word comes from the Greek words petros meaning "stone" and glyphein meaning "to carve", and was originally coined in French as poglyphe.

In addition to complimenting you on your photography, I would like to compliment you on your writing. Many of your photographs are accompanied by interesting and detailed descriptions of the subject. They show solid knowledge of the subject and its locale. You know your stuff. I have learned things from your descriptions.
Donna Greene replied:
Thank Chris. I learned that if you tell something about each photo they show up more when people search for stuff on the Internet. Although sometimes I get a little lazy about it.
